'One' is an ambitious million-piece painting by
Ohio artist Matthew Adelman. As it is completed,
individuals will have the opportunity to purchase
the one-inch by one-inch squares that make up
'One' - one at a time or hundreds at a time.

By making pieces of the whole accessible to everyone,
Matthew hopes to bring something beautiful to many
people at once. By allowing everyone to choose how
they interact with 'One' - which piece or pieces you
select, for what reasons, how you display them - 'One'
also becomes much larger than the individual owner.

From the artist:
"As an artist I have often struggled with what I could create that is not like what others have created before me. Certain artists - Van Gogh, Pollock, Krasner as well as many others - have inspired me, and struck me deeply when I view their pieces, but I was seeking my own voice, as we all do.

"As a part of understanding myself and the work I enjoy creating I questioned what it is that would really make me happy. My answer came with many pieces. First, I enjoy painting very large paintings. At the same time I have also wanted to create smaller pieces but have never been able to manage a small canvas. I also enjoy people interacting with my work. I love conversing with someone who takes interest in what I have done, and finding out why they find the work to be intriguing.

"As I was compiling these thoughts, the idea of 'One' came to life. The concept that I could create a large work that would be very small or very large or in different shapes depending on how the viewer chose to interact was amazing. 'One' takes new life each time someone purchases a square. It is fine art that is accessible to nearly anyone."
